Yesterday I was privileged to photograph a home birth for the first time. And let me tell you, it was exciting! I received a message in the afternoon that early labor had started, so I headed home to make sure my bags were packed and batteries were charged. Then I started getting dinner ready and helping my daughter with her homework. But it was not much more than an hour later that I got another message telling me that mom was dilated to 9 centimeters. Talk about rushing! I literally ran out the door shouting goodbye to my family and then proceeded to sit in rush hour traffic for half an hour. I was on the verge of panicking! Once I passed a minor car wreck that had been causing a terrible traffic jam I punched the gas and prayed that God would let me make it there before the baby was born!
When I arrived at the house, I grabbed my camera and my key and nothing else and bolted for the front door. I flew inside to find that I had not missed the big moment! After three or four minutes of snapping away, baby Shane made his grand entrance into the world and I was there to capture those precious first moments he spent snuggling on his mother.
His mama was a rock star! The birth was fast and she was alone until about fifteen minutes before baby Shane was born but she never panicked. She was strong and calm and simply amazing! The baby was perfect and pink and so sweet and calm. I am so thankful that I was able to preserve these priceless memories for such a sweet family!
